What Formaldehyde Is and Why It Matters

Formaldehyde (chemical formula CH₂O) is a colourless gas used as a preservative, binder, and hardener across building materials, adhesives, fabrics, and household products. Because it is a gas at room temperature, it enters indoor air continuously from the materials that contain it — a process known as off-gassing.

The World Health Organization classifies formaldehyde as a Group 1 carcinogen — associated with nasopharyngeal cancer and leukaemia with prolonged exposure. At room temperature formaldehyde is a gas — so it off-gasses into your indoor air continuously, for months, from the day a material is installed.

Health Effects of Formaldehyde Exposure

Short-Term Symptoms

At 0.1–0.5 mg/m³ — common in newly furnished or renovated villas — eye irritation, tearing, and a burning nose and throat are most frequent. Skin rashes, coughing, chest tightness and headaches follow in poorly ventilated spaces, and are often misattributed to tropical allergies.

Long-Term & Chronic Risks

Prolonged lower-level exposure carries the more serious risks: chronic respiratory sensitisation, and a cancer risk (nasopharyngeal cancer and leukaemia) tied to sustained exposure. Children in high-formaldehyde environments face a disproportionate long-term risk.
